Its amazing how the quirky things you used to like about your best friend can begin to drive you crazy when youre around it 24/7. Just because youve been friends since grade school doesnt mean you should live together. In fact, rooming together can ruin a friendship if the two of you dont discuss a few things ahead of time. Living together is way different than hanging out a lot. Its a mistake to assume that everything will be fine just because you have a history. Here are some things you and your best friend should talk about before you commit to being roomies. Expect things to change. College is about growing and making new friends. Only hanging out with your best friend can hold both of you back. All it takes is one, You didnt used to be that way, to feel trapped. Are you okay with your best friend spending less time with you and more time with new friends? Talk about how youd deal with this and if you expect to be included or not. Set ground rules. A roommate relationship takes friendship to a whole other level because now it involves sharing space, time, and decision-making. If you dont establish boundaries with your friend like you would with someone you dont know as well, its too easy to cross the line. You can end up feeling taken advantage of because you assumed your friend would make the same decisions as you, even though it was never discussed. How will you handle cleaning, bills, and study time? Is it alright to borrow clothes and other personal items? When is it okay to have guests over? Decide these things ahead of time so they wont become issues later. Make room for dating. You may have promised to hang out together, but a cute date can change all that! Its hard not to feel jealous when youre the one left out in the cold. Does your friend expect you to leave the room whenever he or she wants alone time with a new date? Both of you deserve to have a say in who gets private time in the room and what you think is fair. Prepare for stress. College can be stressful at times between the demands of studying, social pressures, working, and maybe even a little homesickness. It can cause even the best of friends to take it out on each other. Support one another by suggesting healthy ways to let off a little steam like exercising, going to a movie, talking, or even giving the other person a little space. Fight Fair. When issues come up, deal with them right away. Dont expect your friend to know whats bugging you just because youve known each other a long time. No one is a mind reader. Giving the silent treatment or having IM arguments can make a semester seem like a lifetime! Plus, its hard to avoid someone who is living four feet away. Rooming with your best friend can be a positive experience, as long as both of you agree upfront how youll handle these situations. It can be reassuring to room with someone who understands and accepts you, rather than starting from scratch with a person youve never met. On the other hand, rooming with a different person gives you a chance to experience something totally new and possibly make another great friend. You’ve got companies selling everything from videos to diets but what you really have is a complete OVERFLOW of information. Everyone knows that you’ll buy one thing, try it, and then buy something else when that doesn’t work. The bad part is that these same companies will BLAME YOU for not working hard enough when the whole basis for their system revolves around how easy it is to implement. Sounds fishy doesn’t it. It’s the classic smokescreen and it happens all of the time. The three industries I’ve seen it happen the most in are credit repair, internet marketing (work from home), and health and fitness. Each of these has one thing in common: the ability for someone to exploit one thing, the fear of something bad happening to you it you choose to go another direction than theirs. Save your money. There are no real quick fixes. There is always a trade off. For example, when you see some famous person with mucho money and a killer body, you never see the sacrifices these people go through to achieve these things. Are you going to make the decisions or are they going to be made for you? Either way, a decision will be made. Quit being a victim and take charge. The world is filled with too many victims and cynics. Get off your ass and do something, make something happen. By Michael Russell It’s no secret that there are many dangerous jobs out there in the world. Heck, some jobs that should be relatively safe, like working at a post office, result in people losing their lives. So while it is true, because of the world that we live in, that no job is totally safe, there are some jobs that are dangerous just by the nature of the job itself. We take a look at just a few of these, most of which will probably be very obvious to you. One of the most dangerous jobs in the world has to be that of a policeman. Not the ones that sit behind a desk, but the ones that are out on the street. With the prevalence of drugs and other substances in our society, every step that a policeman takes out on the streets is a potential step into mortal danger. What makes this all the more worse is that policeman are paid less money than professions that are no where near as dangerous and certainly no where near as important. This makes being a policeman not only dangerous, but thankless. This is something that you really have to want to do with all your heart. Another very dangerous job is that of a fireman. Every time that alarm goes off and a fireman has to respond to a fire, he is potentially walking into his death. Burning homes and warehouses don’t care who you are. They don’t care if you have a uniform on or not. Fire burns and kills everybody the same. In some ways, being a fireman is even more dangerous than being a policeman as each time you take a call you know there is a fire and a potentially dangerous situation. This is another job you have to want to do more than anything. If you’re looking for danger in your work, there is always the military. And it isn’t just going off to fight a war that makes it dangerous. A lot of the military training itself can be very dangerous as they need to prepare you for meeting with the enemy. Soldiers have been seriously hurt during training maneuvers. Men have died from excessively long hikes with full pack in the blazing sun. The commercial says, “Be all that you can be”. It should probably add a caveat to that saying. Something like “At your own risk”. But if you really want to live on the edge of extinction, just get yourself some training with explosives and find yourself a job on the bomb squad. Attempt to repair the damage, or start a new life alone? One of the difficulties of this time is the challenge of being able to think clearly. As soon as thoughts return to the state of the relationship, the emotions kick in and clarity falls by the wayside. There is of course the past the good times, the memories, the gifts, the children, the mementoes, the accumulations of the passage through time of two people and all they collect together. Is it worth throwing THAT all away for a moment, or a year, or two, of madness and indiscretion. After all he’s weak-minded, the temptation was there, she threw herself at him what else could you expect to happen. And there’s the future the growing old together, the holidays and adventures and romance still imagined the kids growing up, the grandchildren why sacrifice all of those dreams, after all he says he’s sorry and it won’t happen again? And there’s the present the shame, having to endure those sympathetic looks, the sudden silences when you walk into a room, going shopping with the whole world knowing you failed to keep your man. None of that matters. That doesn’t mean that those things aren’t important to you. If something is important to you then it is important. But just because something is important doesn’t mean it matters. What matters is you feeling okay about yourself and your world as soon as possible. You have choices to make and you don’t know what to do for the best. You’ve been betrayed and you want to believe it won’t happen again but 5 or 10 years ago you’d have heard it would never happen ever. The mistake is to believe that you can make a wrong decision. You can make decisions that don’t bring about what you want. After all you did make a choice to enter into a long-term agreement with your partner wanting long-term happiness together didn’t you? So you make choices based on the idea that the choice will bring you what you want. The difficulty here is that you haven’t decided what you want. So that’s a priority here. You have to decide what you want. One of the difficulties that some women encounter is knowing what they want. This is difficult because many many women spend their lives giving themselves away. They give themselves body and soul to their partners, they give themselves to their children, they end up responsible for the care of elderly parents and maybe other aging, isolated relatives, but they very rarely give as much care to themselves as they do to others. This is wonderful. There is nothing nicer than having someone care for you in a loving way when you need someone to do that. But what happens in the mind of someone who is always looking after the needs of others is that they neglect themselves. I’m not talking here of appearance, or nutrition, I’m talking about feeling as if life is fulfilling; feeling important; feeling as if you are valued and appreciated. Because of this the decision as to what exactly you do want, right now, at this very difficult moment in your life, can seem beyond your ability to make. The very act of thinking about you and your needs immediately brings on associated thoughts of how this choice will affect the children, the parents, the friends, the partner and so on. And there is this huge and very loving desire to minimise the hurt to anyone else, even if that means sacrificing yourself. So your first choice is to decide whether or not you’re ok with continuing to sacrifice yourself and your needs and put others first. If you are ok with that then the problem is solved. Just do whatever your partner wants you to do. Do whatever it takes to minimise the impact on family members. If you totally and genuinely make this choice you will be okay because you have decided to have no needs and no desires and no wants and that will make your life very simple. If you make this choice because it avoids making any other then you will not be okay. By Craig Ballantyne Most people think they have to starve themselves and do hours of cardio to lose fat. But that’s not true. You can lose weight and increase your metabolism with a hard diet or boring exercise plan. I strongly recommend a diet of whole, natural foods combined with fast strength and interval training workouts to help you get results in a hurry. Q: How much fat can I lose with strength and interval training? Answer:The short answer is, ‘a lot’. To be more specific, you should be able to lose one pound of body fat each week (in addition to following sound fat loss nutritional practices). At the same time, you should expect to gain or maintain muscle. Overall, total weight loss will be about a pound per week. Q: Why should I only use each version of a workout for 3-4 weeks? Answer:We want to keep the element of variety in the training program to achieve consistent fat loss (see the above article). Nothing, except poor eating, halts fat loss like staying on a training program for too long. By switching it up on a frequent basis, you’ll avoid fat loss plateaus and keep making gains in strength and fitness at the same time. Q: I’m starting strength and interval training today and I’m unsure what is meant by interval training. Also, as I improve can I reduce the low intensity time to 30 seconds, and then if I improve further can I add more sets? Answer:One set of interval training is defined as: Each time you do an interval and follow it with a rest period. Therefore, to do 3 sets means you will do three intervals and you’ll rest three times. As for improving, focus on increasing the intensity of the intervals. As you get fit, the once relatively hard interval will soon be an easy interval. Therefore, you will just need to increase the resistance. As we improve, simply use a higher level on the stationary cycle. You can reduce the rest periods to 60 seconds, but we don’t often reduce them any further. The key to success is the work interval intensity. Don’t sacrifice work intensity by reducing the rest interval too much. We might also increase the duration or number of work intervals, but we don’t do any more than 12 intervals in a workout. Q: What is the rationale for the eating plan? Answer:1. Recent research* has shown that subjects lost more fat mass and had a greater reduction in their systolic blood pressure when they substituted almonds for complex carbohydrates in their diet. *Wien, M., et al. The post-workout nutrition was chosen based on John Berardi’s recommendations given in the last newsletter. According to John, “During the post-workout period, the body makes a distinctive metabolic shift. It shifts toward fat oxidation (burning) at the expense of carbohydrate. In other words, most of the energy your body uses during recovery comes from fat. At the same time, carbohydrate storage becomes a priority; the body’s attempt to refill those muscle and liver glycogen stores.” 3. Recent research** has shown that, “the American-healthy pattern was characterized by high intakes of green, leafy vegetables; salad dressings; tomatoes; other vegetables (eg, peppers, green beans, corn, and peas); cruciferous vegetables; and tea.” **Kerver, J., et al.
